Technical Perfection, Sun Ra & Inspiration

"As far as his own Saturn label is concerned, impure sounding inserts, unbalanced volume control, production produced scratches, acoustical feedback, eternal grooves, tape murmuring and loudspeaker buzzing are integral to this concept of the creative. Our Western attitude to listening is a fixation and we are shocked, angered or disappointed when we listen to these technically unconventional records. Yet a technically inferior product becomes a profound listening experience when one ceases to regard technical perfection as the only valid prerequisite for musical quality. Oriental, Asian and African cultures have never placed technical quality above the inner quality of music, as evidenced by the credibility of their products. In Western civilisation, technical perfection makes up for a lack of substance. "Luxuriously" recorded music creates a good impression and most record companies proclaim this pleasant but boring and stratified sound as necessary, and the only thing worth using. The result is that a form of compulsory acoustic perfection is then driven into the listener. In other words, if we want to hear Sun Ra we must get used to unconventional recording practices, for better or worse. I would prefer to classify this 'original' production strategy as a way to circumvent a world that relies on technical perfection - a world that endlessly proves that it cannot keep the promises it makes."

Lions Of Judah :: Steve Reid Foundation (12" liner notes)

The Steve ReidFoundation was established by Gilles Peterson in memory of the drummer SteveReid, who died in 2010. The aims of the foundation are to fundraise on behalfof struggling musicians in need of help and support.

Steve Reid was anamazing drummer with a long and illustrious history that stretched from workingwith James Brown, Miles Davis and Fela Kuti through to his own Steve Reid Trioand more recently working with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). He died from throatcancer in the US in April 2010 without the money for treatment that could havesaved his life.

“Steve wasa dude!” said Gilles Peterson back in April when he asked me if I could spread theword about his marathon run in aid of the Steve Reid Foundation, which I duly did.I told him that I was really into the idea of the charity, (which currentlydonates all funds to the Musicians Benevolent Fund here in the UK) and to letme know if there was anything I could do to help.

Then I hadthe idea of creating some kind of a musical tribute, a version of ‘Lions Of Judah’, wherebyall the proceeds would go to the foundation. I mentioned this to Gilles, whosaid: “Sounds great, let’s do something!”

To thoseof you who know of me and my Emanative project, it’s obvious that Steve’s musicis definitely on my wavelength – he even played a Gretsch kit just like myself.And after recently releasing some records with my good friends at FuturisticaMusic, as well as rehearsing the full live band and performing the materiallive, all whilst working to support our three kids - I’m more than aware of thehard work connected with all of this - for everyone involved. But I also know thatthis is part of the joy of it. And at least we are in a position where we can dothis! So it felt like a nice idea to do something to help with this cause.

This quotefrom Steve shines a bit more light on it:

“But with the musicians it’s mainly periods of not working thatcauses problems, you know, and a lot of guys don’t have anybody looking out forthem as they get older. And then you get these sad stories at the end, youknow, about what happened. I just don’t want to go out like Elvin Jones and theother guys. There’s a different way, you know, there’s got to be a differentway to... it shouldn’t be a sad story at the end of every jazz musician’s life,you know.”

It was around this time that Icame across the details for Ahmed Abdullah, original trumpeter and writer of ‘Lions Of Judah’ who played alongside Steve inThe Legendary Master Brotherhood, as well as being a veteran member of the SunRa Arkestra!

“And then we have Lions Of Judah which was written by AhmedAbdullah. He’s one of my favourite composers.” – Steve Reid

I sent Ahmed a message askinghis permission to use our version of the track for the purposes of The SteveReid Foundation and if he’d be up for playing on it? To my surprise I receiveda reply around maybe an hour later, saying that he was in London holidayingwith his family for a few days and that if we could arrange something to fit inaround his family’s plans he’d be interested in playing something on it! Wespoke the next day and arranged a last minute session for the following day atWax Recordings, recommended to me only a short while before by Hands On Music.Ahmed had been visiting London every year since he met his wife at RonnieScott’s whilst performing with The Sun Ra Arkestra some twenty years ago, andhe’d always brought his horn hoping to get a chance to play, but for somereason or other it had never quite happened... until now.

We spoke about thesynchronicity of the whole thing and how some things are just meant to happen,and that this was definitely a spiritual thing! Being a Buddhist he saw this asan opportunity to acknowledge the very best of Steve Reid – genius musician andamazing spirit.

He also told us of severalother sad stories of jazz musician friends of his whom he’d worked with like Billy Bangand Marion Brown that had also recently passed.

We later spoke of Steve and ofthe collective known back then as The Legendary Master Brotherhood, and howthose records made back then were basically intended to document the music thatthey performed live with this collective. The chant of “Red Black AndGreen...” that Ahmed sings on our version was what they used to originallyperform live.

He mentioned that the originalinspiration for Lions of Judah was the three leaders known by the name. Mostimportantly in this context was Marcus Garvey who created the Red Black andGreen flag for his organization called the Universal Negro ImprovementAssociation (UNIA) but there was also Jesus Christ and Haile Selassie, allcalled by the name Lion of Judah. And he spoke of his belief that three is avery important number in matters of spiritual significance.

All in all, it really was anamazing project with some very generous spirits involved. It was a pleasure andan honour to meet and work with Ahmed Abdullah, to have him bless this projectwith his composition and performance and to have him help us travel thespaceways. (It was also lovely to get to meet his wife Monique Ngozi Nri and their daughter Tara too.) RobertStrauss at Wax Recordings captured Ahmed’s vibe beautifully; Jessica Laurentracked down and had repaired a dusty old Farfisa Organ that had been insomeone’s loft for 20 yrs like sleeping beauty; Ben Hadwen and Max Grunhardblew the soul outta their horns whilst Nick Haward dropped two b-lines, bothelectric and upright. And to top it all off, Guy Davie at Electric Masteringran it through their 70’s EMI desk from Lagos, Nigeria that was used to producerecords for Fela Kuti.

Then last but definitely not least came the Re-Edit fromSteve Reid collaborator Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet (bounced to tape by NathanFake to attain a more vintage sound). Throughout all of this, over in Montreal,Gene Pendon from HVW8 (responsible for the sleeve art for my records) was busycreating this beautiful homage to Steve for the cover, and Made In Earnest have finishedit all off with their usual design skills. Huge thanks to everyone who hascontributed their art to the foundation’s cause!

The Jazz Baroness

Documentary about the British Jewish baroness who fell in love with the jazz genius Thelonious Monk.

Nica, the Baroness de Koenigswarter, was a major supporter of jazz in New York in the 1950s and 60's, her home becoming a meeting point, unofficial rehearsal space and, above all, sanctuary for the leading jazz musicians of the time.

The drum kit (antique Gretsch) I used for some of the sessions for space was lent to me by Steven De Koeningswater, one of Nica's grandchildren. It belonged to his father, Clifford Jarvis who played with Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Freddie Hubbard to name but a few!

working on two emanative remixes this wk!! having a ball with them too. now the album is done and dusted and i've had a couple of wks to chill and catch up on some very necessary catching-ups.....it's nice to sink my teeth into some fresh music, the mixes are both SO different (ain't gonna tell ya 4 whom yet neither!)

The first has some nice and up-tempo jazz dance funkiness, but in an emanative stylee! slightly latin, a tad funk, and very jazz.

...the second is deffo on a downtempo jazz hip-hop tip (at the mo' anyways? we'll see)i'm equally excited about both mixes.

I had a chance to put down some live drums to tape for one of dem whilst recording for "When On Earth"....soon come (7" out sept!)
the other I'd already done some time ago...jazz bop hip-hop slow and low brushes!

tempted to mention the vocalists........(but, i'll hold back in case i'm the only mutha who digs the tracks?)

Getting some nice plays with Turn Your Lights On I noticed today! Brother Scrimshire said in his podcast http://www.scrimshire.com/podcasts.html that it was maybe his fave tune of the year....what a dude!
He said that to me himself , but I thought he was just being polite?

Then there's Mr Beatnick's The Fourth Day (???think that was the title?) which I heard at CD-R, Plastic People... vey nice! Hopefully his Fog On The Runway is on the B-side? (Just my wishful thinking!)Also dig anything Nick gets his mitts on!
